There are many ways to approach designing a modern interior. However, there a few strategic ways to accomplish a streamlined look without breaking the bank. Many modern interiors are achieved successful by maintaining a feeling, such as clean, open, dark, or sophisticated – but it does not stop there! It is important to remember, that modern design is not defined by one style but instead takes on many different appearances. There are variations, such as; Mid-Century Modern, Modern Farmhouse, and Urban Modern, with more styles are emerging every year.

The first key to designing modern, is by establishing a cohesive theme that ties all areas of the home together. This can be achieved through a consistent color theme, accents throughout the home, and consistent lighting fixtures. A cohesive look allows the home to feel connected and harmonious for all family members living in the home and guests who are visiting. Consistent lighting applies to not only fixture choices, but also the color of light, such as warm or cool lighting that plays a key role in allowing the home to feel either open and bright with cooler lighting or more intimate and inviting with warmer lighting.

When designing with a consistent color theme, it is typically suggested to design based on the design theme you have decided upon. Here are a few to help guide this process.

  1. Mid-Century Modern design uses warmer rich hues, dark greens and walnut stained, solid furniture with rounder edges. In that case, if the whole style of the home is outside of the Mid-Century theme, such as in a child’s bedroom, a warm terracotta color or olive green can be applied to the walls or used as an accent color in the furniture or décor.
  2. Modern Farmhouse design involves a rustic look mixed with modern elements, such as pairing washed white wood with black framed industrial ceiling pendants. The look is warm, inviting, open and bright. By placing unique elements, such as wood planks, clear vases with dried flowers and signage in corridors, bathrooms and laundry rooms, the whole home can easily be tied together.
  3. Urban Modern design is achieved through unique, sophisticated features, such embellished sideboards, larger pendant lighting (for a more dramatic effect), and the use of contemporary furniture. To maintain a home that feels like living in a big city, some design elements such as high ceilings, gold framed furniture, grand fixtures or a feature wall, can really help to make the whole home feel elevated in every room.

When designing with an accent color, such as black or gold, it is important to consider the following to create a visually appealing space that looks effortless and timeless. Consistency in accents will create a seamless look throughout the home.

  1. Cabinetry Hardware
  2. Door Handles
  3. Window Frames
  4. Lighting Fixtures
  5. Wall Décor; Picture Frames, Mirrors & Wall Art
  6. Small Décor; Vases, Pillow Covers, Trays & Small Accents
  7. Tableware & Serve ware

The second key element in designing a modern home is furniture and placement. Each theme that modernity encompasses, will follow a different guideline. Most furniture in a modern home will be a consistent shade, once again, depending on the theme followed. Many modern designs will use furniture that has various shades of gray, white or black to achieve a clean, timeless look.

The third key is through using décor that provides a statement, depending on which modern theme you have chosen. The way to accomplish this is through styling of shelves, bold lighting choices and by strategically layering elements to achieve a well-composed look. One way to accomplish this is by placing larger objects in the background and varying smaller objects in the foreground or through the use of a gallery wall that incorporates frames of varying sizes with a consistent frame color.

Overall, the Modern home is achieved through consistency of choices along the design process. There are many layers to achieving a modern home but it is important to remind yourself that it can be achieved through styling, changing the wall color or applying wallpaper, swapping out a few furniture pieces, hardware and lighting fixtures.
